welcome to 2017 summer advanced english 1a and 1b
This hybrid summer class is being offered through Vision Charter School for select 8th grade students. By taking 9th grade English during the summer of 2017, incoming 9th grade students will be on track to utilize the advanced opportunities offered by the state of Idaho, complete an Associates of Art degree during high school and/or obtain an Honors diploma from VCS. However, it needs to be understood that taking a year-long course in nine weeks is rigorous. Please review the example syllabi (2017 syllabi may change from those posted below) listed below to ensure that your student is committed to completing both courses, Advanced English 1A and Advanced English 1B, and that s/he will be able to complete the course work as outlined in the syllabi.
The cost of each course is $225.00. As a participant in the Fast Forward program, the cost will be paid through that program for ENGLISH 1A and ENGLISH 1B. We will assist your student in enrolling in the Fast Forward program once receipt of your acceptance letter is received. The minimum grade to achieve is a "C" for each course per VCS guidelines. As part of the Fast Forward program, if your child does not earn credit for either class, the student will need to pay for the NEXT course taken through the advanced opportunities program before the program will again begin paying for courses. (ie., pay for a class during HS) ALL middle school students' grades through the Fast Forward program will be transcribed to the students' high school transcripts. Per VCS master requirements, any grade achieved below a "C" may require the student to retake the course.
Students MUST participate in both courses. These are hybrid courses, meaning the majority of the class work will be online with an ON-CAMPUS weekly, Wednesday meeting from 1:00pm - 4:00pm at Vision Charter School. Students MUST attend weekly in-person meetings as part of the course requirements. Absences must be approved in advance by the instructor, Mrs. Mitchell. (** Schedule for 2017 summer beginning-end times are still be decided)
If your child cannot attend weekly in-person meetings regularly (ie., miss more than one per month), then a better option for summer English might be IDLA. The cost of this option is $75/credit and there is no in-person requirement. (students can also use Fast Forward funding) The benefit of having a teacher-led class to keep your student motivated and on target for finishing the class should be considered. Summer time is an easy time to lose track of academic responsibilities and having to come to school once a week may be beneficial to your student.
The IDLA form can be obtained here.
